Wide Brim, Long Silhouette
Music has always been at the heart of African culture, passed down through generations, shared in ceremonies, and woven into everyday life. This bronze statue captures that tradition. A woman stands gracefully, holding a stringed instrument close to her body, as if about to play. A wide brimmed hat frames her face and gives the figure an effortless elegance. The warm reddish brown patina runs across her fitted dress and along the curves of the instrument, creating a richness that changes depending on where the light falls.
Imagine her on a sideboard in your living room, next to a stack of books, or by the entrance where she sets the tone for the rest of the home. A piece of african art that brings soul and beauty to any space.
Fire, Wax, and Skilled Hands
Every piece in The Muses collection begins as a wax model sculpted by artisans in Burkina Faso. Lost wax casting is a process that goes back thousands of years across the African continent. The wax is encased in a clay mold, then melted out as molten bronze is poured in to take its place. Once the metal cools, the mold is broken apart and cannot be used again.
The surface is then finished entirely by hand, with patina applied through heat and chemical treatment to bring out the warm reddish brown tone that defines this contemporary sculpture. Each piece reflects hours of focused, skilled work.

F.A.Q
What is lost wax casting?
Lost wax casting is one of the oldest metalworking techniques in the world. The artist begins by sculpting the original form in wax, which is then covered in a clay mold. When heated, the wax melts away, leaving a hollow cavity that is filled with molten bronze. Once cooled, the clay mold is broken to reveal the finished bronze statue. Because the mold is destroyed in the process, each piece can only exist once.
What inspired The Muses collection ?
The Muses collection draws its inspiration from the beauty, strength, and quiet power of the feminine form. Each contemporary bronze statue captures a different expression of grace and presence. The figures stand tall, poised, and deeply rooted, reflecting the role of women as sources of inspiration across African cultures. Every piece is cast by artisans in Burkina Faso using lost wax casting, translating centuries of West African artistic tradition into contemporary sculpture.
How are bronze statues made?
Every bronze statue in our collection is made by artisans in Burkina Faso using the traditional lost wax casting technique. The process begins with a hand-sculpted wax model, followed by mold creation, bronze pouring, and careful finishing. After casting, the patina is applied by hand, giving each statue its own tones, textures, and character. The entire process can take several weeks from start to finish.
How should I care for my bronze statue ?
Bronze is one of the most durable materials in art and requires very little maintenance. Dust your statue regularly with a soft dry cloth. Avoid using water, chemical cleaners, or abrasive materials as these can damage the patina. Keep your bronze statue away from direct sunlight for extended periods to preserve the depth of its color. Over time, the patina may evolve naturally, which adds character and authenticity to the piece.
What makes each bronze statue unique ?
Each bronze statue is cast using the lost wax casting method, which requires the mold to be completely destroyed after a single casting. This means no two statues can ever be identical. Beyond the casting process, the patina is applied by hand by artisans in Burkina Faso, creating subtle variations in color, texture, and finish that make every piece truly its own.
Where are your bronze sculptures made ?
All of our bronze sculptures are made in Burkina Faso, West Africa. They are created by master artisans who have inherited the lost wax casting technique through generations. Each piece is cast, finished, and patinated entirely by hand in their workshops. By working directly with these artisans, UMOJA supports authentic West African art and craftsmanship.
How long does a bronze statue last?
A bronze statue is built to last for centuries. Bronze is an extremely resilient metal that does not rust or deteriorate under normal indoor conditions. Many ancient bronze sculptures dating back thousands of years are still intact today in museums around the world. With minimal care, your statue will maintain its beauty for generations.
