Poured by Hand in West Africa
Each piece in The Muses collection is made by artisans in Burkina Faso using lost wax casting, a technique that has been practiced across West Africa for centuries. A wax model is shaped by hand, encased in clay, and fired in a kiln.
As the clay hardens, the wax melts away, leaving a hollow mold into which molten bronze is poured. Once cooled, the mold is broken open and cannot be used again. The patina is then applied by hand, giving each contemporary sculpture its own tone and finish. No two pieces are exactly alike.
