Search for textured wall art online and you will find thousands of results, some at $40, some at $400, all described as "textured", "hand-painted" or "canvas art". From a photo, they can look almost identical. On your wall, they are not the same object at all.
Here is what separates a handmade textured painting from a print, and how to tell them apart before you buy.
What a print is
A canvas print is an image printed by a machine onto canvas, then stretched on a frame. The quality can be excellent, and there is nothing wrong with a good print. But the surface is flat: the texture you see in the photo is part of the image, not on the canvas.
Some sellers go one step further and brush a layer of clear gel over the print to imitate relief. These are often sold as "hand-embellished" or even "hand-textured". The texture is real, but it sits on top of a printed image, and the same piece is reproduced in large numbers.
What a handmade textured painting is
A handmade textured painting starts as a blank canvas. An artist builds the image by hand, layer after layer, with brushes and palette knives. The relief is the paint itself: thick where the artist pressed, thin where they glided, with edges that catch the light differently as you walk past.
Because it is made by hand, no two are exactly alike. Two paintings of the same subject will differ in the stroke, the thickness and the small accidents of the brush.
How to tell the difference
You can usually tell before buying, if you know where to look.
- Look at the edges. On a print, the image often stops abruptly or wraps around the side as a blurred or mirrored extension. On a painting, you see brushstrokes, drips or the natural edge of the paint.
- Look for raking light. Ask for a photo taken with light coming from the side. Real relief casts tiny shadows; a printed texture stays flat.
- Compare several listings. If the exact same image, down to every stroke, appears in dozens of shops, it is a print.
- Ask to see the process. A seller who paints by hand can show you the work in progress. A print seller cannot.
- Check the price against the size. A large hand-painted canvas takes days of work. A 60-inch "hand-painted" canvas sold for the price of a dinner deserves a second look.
What goes into a handmade textured painting
At UMOJA, every painting in our African wall art collection is made to order. Here is exactly what that means.
- A blank canvas. Each painting is created by hand by one of our artisans, starting from nothing. The relief you see is real paint, built up by hand.
- A 450 gsm linen canvas. Natural, strong and elastic, with a fine weave that holds the paint and is made to last.
- Professional paints. Non-toxic and odorless, with deep, rich colors that stay vibrant for years.
- A hand-mounted frame, in black, white, wood, silver or gold, leaving a fine space around the canvas so the painting seems to float. Or no frame at all, mounted or rolled.
- Your size. Seven sizes, from 20″ × 28″ to 47″ × 71″, because the painting is made for your wall, not taken from a shelf.
- Your approval. You receive the first photos the day the work begins, and photos as it progresses. When it is finished, we send you photos and a video. It ships only once you tell us it is right, or after four days without a reply so it reaches you on time.
Painting takes usually one to two weeks, depending on the complexity of the piece. Most orders arrive within three to three and a half weeks.
So, which one should you choose?
A print makes sense when you want a specific image at a low price, for a temporary space or a room you plan to redo soon.
A handmade textured painting makes sense when the piece is meant to stay: above the sofa you will keep for ten years, in the entryway of a home you love. It brings something a print cannot: the presence of a hand, real relief that changes with the light, and the knowledge that this exact canvas exists only on your wall.
